Last week I mentioned introducing wedding related topics. I thought I would start with registry basics.

WHERE: Where you register depends on budgets and personal preference. If possible try to register at a min of 2 and max of 4 places to avoid confusion for guests.  If possible register at a place(s) that allow you to manage your registry online.

Casa Sugar recommends using sites like MyRegistry to register online from a variety of stores around the world, giving your friends and family a central place to shop for you. Myregistry is free to join and takes the guess work out of gift giving and receiving. MyRegistry and Paypal are also  good options if gifts in cash (placed in gorgeous envelopes) are the norm in your family. Think honeymoon and down payments …

SCOUT: Window shop around before you select. Getting ahead start will give you more time to shop around for the perfect registry basics. Most retailers have online catalogs. Use images from these to create mood boards. When you have narrowed down your options, visit the actual store before finalizing.

WHAT: If you are planning to move homes shortly after getting married, then skip adding furniture to your registry. What might look great in your current home might end up in storage or cragislist shortly after you move homes. Add gift cards from your fav store instead.

Be adventurous! If you and your partner are into outdoor sports and activities, consider adding equipment and gear like Kayaks, snowboards, bikes, helmets, to your registry.

When choosing your fancy china, think about replacements. Apart from normal wears and tears, there are bound to be shattered pieces sometime. Take into account costs of replacement and discontinuation of designs. I recommend registering for 2-3 additional sets.

Think long term. Think quality versus quantity. Durability versus trendy. Think about what works for BOTH of you. Start with the basics. I like Real Simple‘ wedding registry checklist. It has all the basics and is organized by rooms. Access the checklist here.
