baby its cold outside + mudroom/ entryway essentials

The arrival of Fall and winter means = wet boots, scarves, jackets, coats etc. When its cold, wet and muddy outside, keeping the house clean and free of leaves, dirt and puddles becomes a near impossible task. Gateway to the rest of the house this is when mudroom becomes the hardest working space in the house. This space is also the most practical spot for outerwear, boots, scarves, pet gear and more. For many homes the entryway functions as a mudroom. To get the most out of your mudroom—whether you’re adding a new one or reworking the one you already have—carefully consider these factors.

Floors

Mud rooms get messy very quickly, so floors which are easy and quick to clean are essential. I have hardwood floors which tend to be a bit high maintenance. Tiled floors are a good option because they are easy to install, very durable, and come in a host of attractive designs. Paving stones from Topp Tiles are also a great idea for a durable mud room floor. I recommend adding a rug. I prefer one made with natural materials such as jute, for people to first wipe their feet when they walk through the door to prevent wear and tear to floors as well as prevent dirt from traveling into other rooms.

Walls

A semi-gloss paint finish for the walls is a good choice for keep them clean. Personally, I am leaning towards wallpaper options or  chalkboard paint. I also spotted some vinyl wallpapers recently that look just as good. They are the easiest to maintain. And with just a simple sponge and water you can clean the most stubborn of stains in a flash.

Storage

For me is one of the most important spaces when it comes to storage. Smart planning is key. The space needs to be not only organized well, items need to be neatly stored while being accessible. Since there isnt much square footage, I suggest going vertical. A sturdy coat rack, hooks, and shelves maximize space. Use woven baskets to stow away hats, scarves, gloves, socks etc. A ledge that holds pretty bowls for keys, phones and coins contain the mess of smaller items. A small bench or chair is practical for slipping in and out of boots.

Decor

Last but certainly not the least factor to consider is decor. Accessorize stylishly, as this in most homes sets the tone for the rest of your home. Fresh flowers or a plant add character to the space. This is also a great place to hang a mirror for that final check before you the house.
